According to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the Bangkok Car Free Day will be held on September 23, in a move to encourage motorists to commute by foot, to cycle or to resort to public transport.
Advisor to the Bangkok Governor, Dr. Kraisak Chunhawan, said the campaign is part of the city’s green initiatives, which aim to reduce the residents’ car dependency and overall carbon emissions.
Bangkok will join the world’ most popular cities such as Copenhagen, Munich, London, New York, Bogota and Tokyo in hosting the car-free day event. The campaign will be held in Lumpini Park. Organizers also aim to stage one of Thailand’s largest bike parades on the Rama VIII Bridge where over 10,000 bicycles will join in the formation of the longest Thai flag.
A seminar on Bangkok and the car-free day’s impact as well as an exhibition on other cities’ car-free day events, a discounted bike sale and a free health check-up will be included in the event.
