Lieutenant Pinkerton is on shore-leave in Japan. He decides to marry a 15 years old Japanese girl whose family has fallen into poverty. Sacrificing all her ties with the Japanese way of life Butterfly agrees to marry Pinkerton. But while Pinkerton has sailed back to the United States, Butterfly waits patiently for her husband to come home.
